Smashing Magazine published an article on selecting a hosting provider, 9 Steps To A Happy Relationship With Your Hosting Provider. This is a better hosting HowTo than mine, but they make some of the same points. I recommend using Netcraft.com to pick top web hosting providers, but I like their idea of using The Better Business Bureau to check up on a provider’s business ethic.
Item 2 of their 9 Step plan gives an indirect plug for some big hosting providers. Now some of these hosting companies in item 2 are no doubt good, but I’m pretty sure they are not all good. Like my recommendation here they talk about bias and outright fraud in reviews of hosting companies. In their item 4 they warn to not “trust the testimonials that appear on the websites of hosting providers…”
Better Business Bureau, Netcraft, and independent hosting forums are good sources of information on hosting. First hand experience and recommendations of friends are another reliable source of information. Overall, very good article on hosting from Smashing Magazine.
